Friday, July 29 is National Lipstick Day, which lead us to Heather Adessa, a New Rochelle resident and owner of Glo Beauty Bar in Mamaroneck.
Below, she shares some lipstick pointers.
- Apply a nude or matching lip liner to your lipstick over your entire lips before applying lipstick. This helps your lipstick last longer.
- While summer is always fun for wearing color, sometimes that is more maintenance. Adessa recommends nude lipsticks or easy glosses to wear, especially for beachy looks or days at the pool.
- Also wear an SPF gloss or chapstick to help lips from sunburn (yes, lips can sunburn!).
Over the years this simple tube of color has had its ups and downs from scandalous to sexy. It's said Actress Sarah Bernhardt created hearsay by applying “lip rouge” in public in the 1870s. Queen Victoria considered coloring one's lips impolite, yet Winston Churchill thought it was an excellent morale booster during WWII. And, according to lore, George Washington was a lipstick wearer, paired, of course, with his powdered wig. Some even claimed, back in the day, that wearing it was a devilish attempt to trick men into marriage.
