LARCHMONT, NY – When 38-year-old New Yorker writer Ariel Levy left for a reporting trip to Mongolia in 2012, she was pregnant, married, financially secure and successful on her own terms. A month later, none of that was true.

At 4 p.m. on April 9, the Larchmont native and author is scheduled to read from her new memoir, “The Rules Do Not Apply” at the Larchmont Public Library. According to a statement from event organizers, refreshments will be served at 3:30 p.m.

“Levy picks you up and hurls you through the story of how she built an unconventional life and then watched it fall apart with astonishing speed,” organizers said in the statement.

According to organizers, Levy – much like others of her generation -- was raised to resist traditional rules about work, love and womanhood.

“I wanted what we all want: everything. We want a mate who feels like family and a lover who is exotic, surprising. We want to be youthful adventurers and middle-aged mothers,” she said. “We want intimacy and autonomy, safety and stimulation, reassurance and novelty, coziness and thrills. But we can’t have it all.”

Calling her book “profound and beautiful,” event organizers said Levy chronicles the adventures and heartbreak of being “a women who is free to do whatever she chooses.”

The book has received praise from some other famous writers.

“Her account of life doing its darnedest to topple her, and her refusal to be knocked down, will leave you shaken and inspired,” said writer, producer and actress Lena Dunham in a statement. “I am the better for having read this book.”

The Larchmont Public Library is located at 121 Larchmont Ave. Call 914-834-2281 or visit the Friends of the Larchmont Public Library for more information.
