MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Students from Mamaroneck High School’s Furniture Sharehouse service club will hold a drive Saturday to benefit the furniture bank, which redistributes the items for free to families in need.

Leslie Garwood, rive coordinator and Sharehouse volunteer, came up with the idea of the drive when her son was attending Mamaroneck High School to engage the students in community service and leverage the school district's ability to reach the public.

"The Furniture Sharehouse is very cool because it recycles furniture that would otherwise go into landfills by giving it to people who need it, the need being determined by a network of social service agencies that screen clients and refer them to us," she said.

Since 2000, the Furniture Sharehouse has helped 2,500 families, including 460 in 2012. After last year's drive, two truckloads of furniture were taken from the high school to the Sharehouse.

"It's great because the drive replenishes our ever-dwindling supply of furniture," Garwood said. "Stuff goes out as fast as it comes in."

The drive will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot at Mamaroneck High School, 1000 W. Boston Post Road, rain or shine.

Only basic home furniture in good condition will be accepted. Before you load up your car, visit the warehouse's website to make sure your furniture meets the donation guidelines.
