A 19-year-old man died by suicide after shooting himself on a street in Westchester, officials announced.

The incident happened on Friday, March 29, when shots were fired on Fulton Lane in Mount Vernon, according to city officials.

Responding officers found that a 19-year-old man had suffered a gunshot wound and had died from his injuries, officials added.

A preliminary investigation into the death determined that the man took his own life, according to officials.

"The Mount Vernon Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this heartbreaking event," officials said in a statement on Friday, adding, "Counseling and support services are being made available to those impacted by this tragedy."

The investigation into the death is ongoing. The man's name has not yet been released.
