Lorraine Avenue was shut down on Saturday, as hundreds of volunteers joined local officials, members of the Westchester Knicks and a team from KaBOOM – a non-profit organization that helps build pop-up playgrounds in just days – to renovate the playground, complete with several new basketball courts donning classic Knicks colors.
For two days last week, volunteers were busy in Mount Vernon, preparing the playground and nearby staging areas for Saturday’s big build, when they completely renovated the space in just a matter of hours, leaving local youth with a brand-new playground.
The designs for Heavy D and the Boyz Playground were born out of the ideas of nearly 100 local children. In August, the Department of Recreation hosted a “Design Day at Lorraine Park,” where they were given the opportunity to express what they would like in a local playground.
Mount Vernon Mayor Ernest Davis said that the children’s input heavily influenced the final design of the project.
“The designs drawn by Oakwood Heights’ children back in August will be incorporated into the playground this ‘Building Day,’” he said. “By providing this new play space, Mount Vernon children will have another recreational facility they deserve, filled with balance and quality apparatus so they can thrive.”
