Delegates from John Jay High School’s chapter of the national organization, the Junior State of America, won several “Best Speaker” awards in their Northeast Fall State Convention in November, school officials said.
JSA delegates’ interests range from politics and government, to the law and education. Local chapters aim to produce active, informed citizens through an exchange of ideas, including debates and “thought talks,” according to the organization's website.
Best speaker awards, or “gavels,” went to Lewisboro students Meghan Howes, Sam Howes, Alyssa Loffredo, and Aiyana Lewis.
The theme of the fall convention was "Opportunity and Obstacles: Fulfilling the American Dream."
The four were chosen by their fellow delegates for their performances in speeches and debates. They tackled such weighty issues as the economy, foreign policy, and the environment.
More than 350 student delegates from 25 schools in the Northeast region took part in the convention.
