Kat-Lewisboro Schools to Reopen With Delay Friday

LEWISBORO, N.Y. – All schools in the Katonah-Lewisboro School District will reopen on Friday but with a two-hour delay.

The delay is to prevent buses from having to operate during the dark, morning hours and help drivers avoid low-hanging branches and any debris that may still be in the roads.

Though the schools will be open, Town Supervisor Charles Duffy said the state of emergency is still in effect.

“As of Thursday afternoon, Westchester County had 4,800 NYSEG customers who were still without power – nearly half of them are in Lewisboro,” Duffy said. “We still have about 2,100 homes without power.”

Duffy said that, while he’s pleased that kids will have a safe, heated environment to go to on Friday when the schools reopen, he will keep the state of emergency active until the number of outages drops below 200.

“According to NYSEG, 1,500 of the 2,100 are supposed to be stored by 11 p.m. Thursday night,” he said. “But I’ve been disappointed with their restoration estimations in the past. We were the last town totally restored after Irene and we are the final one now. I’m tired of being the last one chosen at the dance.”

The supervisor also noted that the town’s parks and recreation department has been performing around-the-clock welfare checks on the senior citizen population. Also the town’s warming stations – at the three firehouses and the Town House – remain open and staffed 24 hours a day.
