John Jay High School Celebrates Homecoming

CROSS RIVER, N.Y. – John Jay High School celebrated an event-filled Homecoming this past weekend that was capped off by a 35-8 victory by the varsity football team against visiting Pearl River.

The weekend kicked off with a traditional pep rally in the gymnasium followed by two days of sports.

The pep rally opened with a performance of the national anthem by John Jay’s student a capella groups. Members of the fall sport teams then assembled and the captains gave brief introductions and acknowledged senior-year players. Interspersed between the team acknowledgements, music and dance numbers were student singing groups “The Rolling Tones,” “The Treble Makers,” and “The Notables.” The Dance Squad also provided entertainment with several numbers.

“Homecoming is always exciting,” said soccer coach Paul Smith. “Graduates return and we have the chance to make a statement to our opposition. The fans absolutely make a difference. Players feed off of a loud, supportive crowd.”

The football game featured a halftime show that displayed a parade of floats that represented each class. The festivities also included music and dance entertainment.

Players on the varsity football squad said Homecoming and its pageantry and excitement helped them get ready for the game.

“The crowd gets us pumped up, but we still try to focus,” said Pete Van Geldern.

Other sporting events included field hockey, girls' soccer, volleyball, swimming and diving, cross country and junior varsity football.
