LEWISBORO – The town of Lewisboro would like to find a new home for its police headquarters.

Supervisor Charles Duffy says the current building on Spring Street is too small and is not compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

“Our insurance agent has told we should find a better facility,” Duffy said. “It’s not compliant with the ADA and it really isn’t up to standards for a police force.”

One site the town is considering is the current location of the offices of the Katonah-Lewisboro School District on Shady Lane. The school district has plans to move its headquarters to the Increase Miller Elementary School in Goldens Bridge, leaving behind a series of trailers and an old house, which currently serves as the superintendent’s office.

“When we heard they are vacating those trailers, which are ADA compliant, we thought we could mothball the police building and move into there,” Duffy said.

Duffy said if the town was to strike a deal it would just be for the trailers only and not the house, which he said is not ADA compliant. The move would be a stop-gap until the town could find a more permanent location for the police department and wouldn’t involve purchasing the trailers, but rather some sort of lease.

“We could sign a three-year lease to give us time to look for a long-term option,” he explained. “We have to plan what the town will look like three years from now and this would give us time for long-term planning.”

Duffy said the town has unofficially reached out to the school district to inform officials of its interest.

“We are just beginning conversations,” he said. “The idea hasn’t even been brought up before the school board yet.”

At a town board meeting last week, the board officially voted to explore the possibility of the move.

“That way, when I do speak to school officials, they will know that I have the backing of the [town] board,” Duffy said.

According to Duffy, the police department has given a thumb’s up to the idea.

“In speaking with Chief [Frank] Secret, having a larger facility would get us more state police support because they would have more space to work and they would have better changing areas and locker areas,” he said.
