LEWISBORO, N.Y. In less than a week as the new deputy town clerk, Mary Hafter already witnessed one of the more unusual aspects of working in Lewisboro's Town House.
One of the highlights so far was a wedding that took place here, she said. Joann Vasi, the receiver of taxes, married a couple and [Town Clerk] Janet Donohue was the witness. Its a little different from the regular workday. Its something you dont normally get to see.
Hafter took over this week as the new deputy town clerk when Donohue, the former deputy, was appointed by the town board to take the place of departing Town Clerk Kathy Cory, who is retiring after 30 years.
Hafter, who has lived in Lewisboro for 17 years, is originally from Rochester, N.Y. where she was an assistant district attorney for Monroe County. Upon moving downstate, she became an assistant attorney for Westchester County.
But for the past several years, Hafter, who is married to husband, Andy, and mother to two boys, ages 14 and 11, has been a stay-at-home mom. During that time, she was a community volunteer for the Junior League of Westchester County and a member of the Lewisboro Elementary School PTA, where she served as president for two years. She was also a member of the Katonah-Lewisboro School Districts Parent Council and served on the advisory committee for the disabled.
The new deputy town clerk said she read about Corys impending retirement and Donohues promotion and decided to throw her hat into the ring and get back into the workforce.
My kids have gotten to that age where I dont need to watch them every minute, she said. So, this seemed like a natural progression from being a volunteer to working for my community.
Hafter said the biggest challenge so far has been juggling the myriad tasks for which the town clerks office is responsible.
But Im enjoying it very much. I like when the community members come in and we can help them out with what they need," she said. Im really happy to be working with Janet. Kathy has passed on to her a wealth of knowledge and I wish her the best. Im happy to be following in her footsteps.
