Lottery Drawing Set For Leatherman's Loop Race In Lewisboro

LEWISBORO, N.Y. -- A lottery drawing for spots in the Leatherman's Loop 10K race will be held on Friday, according to Rob Cummings, an organizer for the event.

The lottery itself closed on Monday, Cummings explained.

"Our four-day lottery period includes a weekend and two weekdays so there is plenty of time to sign up," Cummings explained when discussing the purpose of the four-day timeline for the lottery. "Any longer and it is too drawn out and credit card issues start cropping up (cancellations, expirations, etc.) that complicate the lottery drawing process."

Cummings also discussed reasons for having the lottery itself, explaining that it takes away the "rush" to sign up. He noted that there was trouble in previous years that had open registration.

Additionally, Cummings stated that the lottery allows for sign-up time for everyone who is interested and gives a fair shot at running. Prior to the lottery system, according to Cummings, a sign-up time started on Jan. 1 at 9 a.m., a time when many people were on vacation.

Recalling the history of signing up, Cummings noted the shrinking times year after year from initial chance to sign up to when spots would sell out. In 2007, it took three months. By 2010 it took three hours in spite of a crash of servers for the registration provider.

A mix of a lottery and open registration was instituted in 2011 and the full lottery system was started in 2012, according to Cummings.

As of 2015, there have been more registrations than spots, with similar numbers as 2012.

"For 2015 we again have just over 1,700 registrations for 1,250 spots," Cummings stated. "We factor in a no-show rate of around 10% so we can let in around 1,350. Odds are once again very good for entrants this year."

The Leatherman's Loop is scheduled to take place on April 26 at 9 a.m. and will be held at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River, on the Pound Ridge border.
