LEWISBORO, N.Y. - No winners have yet been declared in the Lewisboro race for town board.
Both parties say the election is too close to call until the Westchester County Board of Elections releases its official numbers. As of midnight, 80 votes separated first and fourth place. The current front runners are incumbents Dan Welsh (D, I, Working Families) with 1,245 votes and John Pappalardo (R, C) with 1,231. Challengers Rhea Mallett (R, I) and Peter Gross (D, Working Families) tallied 1,165 and 1,144 votes respectively.
Pappalardo (R, C), an attorney from Goldens Bridge, was appointed to the board earlier this year when Bruce Pavlow resigned. During his campaign he had told voters he would approach his commitment to the town board the same way he did as a longtime civic volunteer with the Lions Club and area sports groups.
Welsh (D, I Working Families) has a background in engineering and later changed to a career in IT. He cited the towns finance and taxes as the biggest challenges facing the board.
Gross (D, Working Families) spent years practicing as an attorney, specializing in finance and corporate law and eventually media and entertainment law. One of the keys to Grosss platform was open, transparent government, which he said is the kind of local participatory democracy fundamental to American tradition, in which taxpayers are given the information they need.
Mallett (R, I), also an attorney, is a registered Democrat who ran on the Republican ticket, saying she felt there was no room for party politics on the local level.
