Though the seasonal average for hurricanes is six, there could be as many as 11 hurricanes this season, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). As many as six of them could be Category 3 or higher.
Category 3 is considered a major hurricane, with sustained winds up to 111 to 129 mph, according to the National Weather Service Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale. Some structural damage to small buildings is likely; buildings without foundations, such as mobile homes, are usually destroyed. A large number of trees are uprooted or snapped. Terrain may be flooded inland. Near-total power loss is likely.
“As we saw first-hand with Sandy, it’s important to remember that tropical storm and hurricane impacts are not limited to the coastline,” NOAA Acting Administrator, Kathryn Sullivan said in a statement. “Strong winds, torrential rain, flooding, and tornadoes often threaten inland areas far from where the storm first makes landfall.”
