“About 65 percent of the town still is without power,” said Supervisor Peter Parsons. “Most of that is in the eastern part of town – Waccabuc, South Salem and Vista. Route 123 in Vista is in bad shape. The Oak Ridge shopping center has been without power since the beginning and we need to get that back on. I am very concerned with the shopping center and all stores nearby.”
The Meadow Pond Elementary, also on Route 123, is without power but reopened Monday thanks to a generator.
Parsons said the National Guard came into town Friday to help clear roads and was a big help. With that job nearly complete, he said the onus falls on NYSEG and other power crews visiting from out of state to start getting power back on line.
“It’s a matter of getting up new poles galore and connecting the lines to those poles,” Parsons said.
The town sheltered seven people Sunday night and Parsons said he expects more Monday. With some of the buildings that were being used as shelters reverting to polling places Tuesday, new shelter locations will have to be found.
“We can’t use South Salem firehouse because that’s a polling place and we can’t use the Vista firehouse because that’s where we have the National Guard,” Parsons said. “We are looking at the Goldens Bridge firehouse and we are talking with Ridgefield about using their facilities. We are already using the Ridgefield, Connecticut Park and Rec Center on Danbury Road for showers, so that’s a possibility.”
Meanwhile, the Town House and South Salem firehouse continue to distribute dry ice and bottled water on a first-come, first-served basis
