St. Michael's In Goldens Bridge Celebrates 'Last' Crowning Of Mary

LEWISBORO, N.Y. – For perhaps the last time, parishioners of St. Michael’s Chapel in Old Goldens Bridge celebrated “The Crowning of Mary,” on Sunday, in observance of the saint’s month, May.

With the construction of the large new St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Somers, it is likely that the smaller local Catholic chapels, such as Lewisboro’s St. Michael’s and St. John’s Chapel on Titicus Road in North Salem, will be permanently closed.

It has been traditional for many years at St. Michael’s to celebrate the Crowning with a procession of flowers presented at the altar by grade-school children, as well as scripture readings, organ music and poetry. The ceremony culminates with the children dancing around the Maypole.

St. Michael’s has been serving a small Catholic congregation for more that 115 years. The congregation is a close-knit group who gather for an annual Christmas pageant and a number of other church activities, in addition to weekly Sunday mass.

The building itself has been listed as a Lewisboro landmark, its plaque displayed at the entry. Everyone is invited to stop by and admire the historic building while it is still in active use.

The chapel is on Old Bedford Road in Goldens Bridge.
