SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. -- Harriet Rickerby Raynor, a former 30-year resident of South Salem, died March 4 surrounded by family at her home in Maine. She was 87.
Raynor was formerly active in the PTA and South Salem Presbyterian Church.
She was born Sept. 21, 1924 in Maspeth, N.Y. to the late Emilie Florence Mooers and Alfred Richard Rickerby. In 1942, Raynor graduated from Hempstead High School and started work as a business office representative for the New York Telephone Company. She married Russell Clinton Raynor and they celebrated their 65th anniversary in December.
While her husband attended Tri State College in Angola, Ind., Raynor worked as secretary to the treasurer of the college. She then worked as an executive secretary for Olin Chemicals in Stamford, Conn. before leaving in 1972 to join her husband's business world travels for 15 years.
Raynor and her husband raised their two children in South Salem, where she served as troop leader for the Girls Scouts and as neighborhood chairman and registrar for the Taconic Girl Scout Council. Raynor's daughter, Janice Geigler, is a longtime Connecticut state representative, serving Danbury and New Fairfield since 2002.
In 1987, Raynor and her husband retired to Round Pond, Maine and enjoyed traveling to Boca Grande, Fla. during winters. A member of Helping Hands in Round Pond, Raynor also volunteered with the Miles Memorial Hospital League, taking part in the annual rummage sale.
Surviving are her husband, her daughter Janice Raynor (Tamas) Geigler of Danbury, her son Kenneth Clinton (Anne) Raynor of Kennebunkport, Maine, her sisters Mabel R. Condfer of Ballwin, Mo. and Ruth Emilie Tews of Chandler, Ariz. and two grandsons.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Maine. Interment will take place at Chamberlain Cemetery in Round Pound. Donations may be made to the Miles & St. Andrews Home and Hospice at 40 Belvedere Rd., Damariscott, Maine 04543.
