Market Owner Sells Groceries, Growlers and More

Frank DeCicco wants to make his family’s market about more than just selling groceries.

That’s why he recently spiced up the selection at DeCicco Family Markets with beer on tap from local microbreweries like Pleasantville’s Captain Lawrence and a whole section of organic meats.

“You need to be different,” he said of the variety at his Westchester stores. “It’s a competitive business. You can get groceries at the gas station or drugstore now.”

One way the local company beats out its competition is in its ability to honor special requests from customers. For example, when his Cross River location opened this past August, DeCicco was able to add an entire section of aged beef just a few days after someone asked for it.

And then there’s what he refers to as his new “growler station.” At the Jefferson Valley and Cross River stores, beer lovers are now encouraged to forgo the six-pack-of-Bud routine by taking home a jug of beer instead.

“We can try new ideas. If something works well in another location, we’ll try it out here,” he added of Cross River.

The same goes for wine aficionados, he says. DeCicco is working on a partnership which will bring in a local merchant, like Cross River Wines to offer wine and cheese tastings at his store in the coming months.

He says his in-house chef routinely switches up the cuisine in the store’s prepared food section. He has even occasionally implemented Indian food into the mix.

DeCicco Family Markets has stores in Jefferson Valley, Pelham, Scarsdale and Ardsley. DeCicco lives in Rockland County with his wife Caroline, 7-year old daughter Gianna and 3-year old son Frank.
