YORKTOWN, N.Y. – Sixth-grade teacher Jill Proskin goes for the grand prize at 12:30 p.m. Thursday when the second part of her stint as a “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” contestant airs on ABC.

The Cross River resident filmed her episodes earlier this week and could not reveal how she faired on the show. Proskin said she tried out for the show earlier this year when she attended a taping as an audience member.

“I was in the studio audience and when you’re in the studio audience you can take the test,” said Proskin, who was one of only 10 people that day to pass the test. “I never actually thought I would be on it."

After she passed the test, Proskin went through a round of interviews with the show’s producers, who said she would be placed into a pool of contestants for a two-year period.

“I thought, 'oh please, I’ll never get on the show,'” Proskin said. “But then they called three weeks later. I was absolutely shocked.”

Proskin scrambled for a substitute teacher and was allowed by the district to tape the show in New York City this week.

“Everybody at the show was so nice and Meredith Vieira was lovely,” she said about the show’s host, who lives in Irvington.

Proskin said her students were equally excited about her appearance on the show when she broke the news. With a half-day of school Wednesday, she hopes her students were able to catch the first part of her appearance.

“I can’t wait to talk to my students [Thursday],” Proskin said.
