In an announcement on Tuesday, April 9, the Garrison Union Free School District in Putnam County revealed that Gregory Stowell was offered the position of superintendent.
Stowell is expected to be officially appointed to the role at the next Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, April 10 at 7 p.m.
Once he takes the district's helm, Stowell will replace Carl Albano, who officially retired from the role in September 2023 and has been serving as interim superintendent since.
According to district officials, the school board was "unanimous" in feeling Stowell "exemplifies the qualities we aspire to see in our graduates and possesses the experiences and qualifications to lead our school community."
Before coming to Garrison, Stowell served as Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services for the Eastchester Union Free School District in Westchester County. There, he helped lead the development of multi-tiered systems of support and enhanced pupil personnel services.
Stowell also served as Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel & Educational Services at the Mahopac Central School District, where he supervised the pupil personnel services and technology department.
During his time in Mahopac, Stowell also co-created the “Breakthrough Classroom” pedagogical framework that gives teachers professional development on strategies to help students develop next-generation skills, in addition to serving as the district's Chief Emergency Response Officer and COVID Administrator during the pandemic.
Stowell's appointment on Wednesday will be followed by a brief reception, according to the district.
