South Salem Biathalon Set For Labor Day

SOUTH SALEM, N.Y. -- The question of who will take the Tanakards is once again being asked as St. John's Episcopal Parish presents the South Salem Church Tavern Biathalon on Labor Day.

Winners of the Sept. 2 event, which consists of a seven-mile bike ride and four-mile run, receive old-fashioned tankards.

"It's just a nod to the old days when people would drink out of tankards," said Brian Stempel, founder and organizer of the event. "There's eight of them. We order them from the UK. They're pewter and they are engraved. It's kind of cool to get one."

This will be the third year of the event, which has already doubled in the number of contestants from 75 during the inaugural running of the race to almost 150 a year ago.

"It's a nice blend of competitive racing combined with those who just want to have fun," said Stempel. "You can do it as an individual or in a relay. A father might do the bike, while his son might do the run. It's a lot of fun and it's become a good race the community has really gotten involved in."

The main purpose of South Salem Church Tavern Biathlon is to raise money for three charities: The Carpenter's Kids Program, Community Center of Northern Westchester, and The Wounded Warrior Project. In 2012, the event distributed more that $5,300 to those programs.

"It's not so much a fundraiser for the church but it's an outreach for the three charities we are supporting. People can have the money go to a specific charity. On their way out, they can mark how much money they want to go to the charity of their choice."

The race will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2 at St. John's Episcopal Church at 82 Spring St. in South Salem.

Residents can register online at raceit.com. The entry fee for individuals is $35. Two person relay team registration is $50 and race day registration is $40 for individuals and $60 for a two person relay team. There is also a walker's division. Online registration is $20. Race day registration is $25.
