POUND RIDGE The business district was packed on the Fourth of July as the town enjoyed one of its most successful Antiques and Farmers Holiday Market in recent years.
The event, sponsored by the Pound Ridge Business Association, began 19 years ago as a street-side antique show. In the early 2000s, a farmers market was added. Mondays event drew hundreds of people, but it wasnt just the quantity of the attendees, organizers said, it was the quality. They were spending money.
There is a ton of people here today. Its really flying, said Joan Silbersher, a member of the Business Association and owner of Antiques & Tools of Business & Kitchen. But not only are there a lot of people, they are buying. They are putting their hands in their pockets.
As if on cue, a customer approached Silbersher to make a purchase a vintage heart-shaped keepsake box.
This is our second time coming here. Its great, said the customer, C. Harvey, from Chappaqua. We come for the antique and collectible aspect of it. Its nice to come and feel like youve found yourself a little treasure.
Out on the sidewalks, the produce and bakers stands were inundated with customers.
This is the fourth one weve done and we love the Fourth of July event because it seems to be the busiest, said Liz Larkin, the proprietor of the Pound Ridge-based Mrs. Larkins, a confectioner of scones, cookies and cupcakes. The weather had been good and the antique markets have been bringing in a lot of tourists. Theres been a lot of foot traffic.
Larkin was donating all her proceeds from the day to ALS Association of Greater New York.
Every penny we make today goes to them, she said.
