Rye Country Advances in Independent School Tourney

RYE, N.Y. -- Jeff Grasso scored 14 points and teammates Matt Staubi and Max Gendelmen each scored 13 for Rye Country Day School Thursday and the host Wildcats topped Staten Island Academy in the quarterfinal round of the New York State Association of Independent Schools.

The top-seeded Wildcats recovered from an early 13-6 deficit and outscored No. 8 seed Staten Island 18-9 in the second quarter to forge a 24-22 halftime lead. RCDS continued its run in the third quarter with a 21-13 advantage to take a 10-point lead into the final quarter.

The Wildcats will host the winner of the quarterfinal between No. 4 Horace Mann and No. 5 Lawrence Woodmere Friday in a semifinal game at 5 p.m. The winner advances to Saturday’s championship game at the Fieldston School in Riverdale, N.Y. in an 11 a.m. tipoff.

RCDS was beaten by Hamden Hall (Conn.) in last week’s Fairchester League tournament final.

James Marzano led all scorers with 22 points for Staten Island.
