PURCHASE, N.Y. Baseball Hall of Famer Dave Winfield and Purchase College Sports Information Director Bobby Ciafardini have announced the release of a new song about legendary Negro Leagues pitcher Satchel Paige through the college's Baseball Music Project (BMP).
Winfield, whose career included a stint with the Yankees from 1981 to 1990, announced the song "Don't Look Back (Something Might Be Gaining on You)" written by composer Fred Sturm, who took famous sayings from the legendary pitcher and made a 3.5-minute song from them.
The song was timed to come out around the time of Paige's birthday (July 7). He would have been 106 this year. Paige, banned from playing in the major leagues because of the color of his skin, played in the Negro League for 20 years. He finally debuted in the majors in 1948 at age 42 with the Cleveland Indians.
The BMP was founded by Purchase College Professor Bob Thompson in 2006 to foster greater awareness of the historical significance of both baseball and music. According to the BMP, more than 2,500 songs have been written about the sport since its founding in the 1800s.
