Visitation and funeral services for Eastchester Union Free School District teacher Arlene O’Neill, who was killed in a murder-suicide at her Yonkers home on Wednesday morning, Oct. 16, will be held on both Tuesday, Oct. 22, and Wednesday, Oct. 23.
O’Neill, a fifth-grade teacher at the Anne Hutchinson School, was fatally shot at her Chittenden Avenue home by her husband, retired New York City Police Department officer Sean O’Neill, age 54. He then turned the gun on himself, authorities said, also adding that the couple's three children, Sean, age 15, Brendan, age 13, and Nolan, age 11, were home at the time.
According to Yonkers Police, the visitation service will be held on Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Flynn Memorial Home at 1652 Central Park Ave. and will likely cause traffic congestion on the northbound Central Park Avenue service road between Tuckahoe Road and Plymouth Avenue.
Parking on the service road and surrounding streets will be limited, the department added.
Additionally, a service for O’Neill will be held on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Annunciation Church at 475 Westchester Ave. This will also cause traffic congestion in the area, police said, adding that St. Eleanoras Lane will be closed between Scarsdale Road and Westchester Avenue to keep attendees safe.
Parking for the service on Westchester Avenue and other streets near the church will be limited, according to Yonkers Police, which will patrol the areas during the services to help with traffic flow.
According to O’Neill's obituary, she was a "larger than life human being whose beautiful eyes and bright smile could light up a room."
O’Neill taught for 26 years, beginning her career with Yonkers Public Schools before teaching fifth grade at the Anne Hutchinson School in Eastchester for a quarter of a century.
She found her career "deeply rewarding," her obituary said.
"She loved her students beyond measure and still kept in touch with some after all these years. She even inspired some to follow in her footsteps," O’Neill's obituary continued.
In addition to her career, O’Neill was also passionate about music, always being found at concerts. She loved attending sports games, too, always cheering on the New York Yankees, Jets, and Islanders.
Above all, she was a devoted mother, her obituary said: "The boys were her entire universe and she would have moved mountains for them."
She is survived by her three sons; her mother, Ann; her sister, Denise; her brother, Mark; and her brother, Pete.
