Before the graduates received their nursing pins and certificates, several of them were recognized for both clinical and academic excellence. In addition, three students shared the $3,000 Thomas J. and Margaret Lynch O’Connor Scholarship Award including Jessenia Rodriguez, a graduate from the full-time day program; Christina Lawton, a graduate from the part-time day program; and Donald Gordon, a graduate of the part-time evening program.
Three student speakers were selected to deliver their thoughts upon graduation. They included George Santana, Erika Berroa and Christina Pedone. All of them expressed the camaraderie that existed among them, their gratitude toward the faculty and staff and their delight in finally becoming licensed practical nurses and venturing into the workplace.
“The Southern Westchester BOCES LPN Program is one of the most challenging nursing programs in this region,” said Santana. “Many have applied and entered the program, but only the few have survived it.”
Following the presentation of certificates, which were handed out by O’Donnell, BOCES Superintendent Dr. Harold Coles, Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services James A. Gratto, Jr., Assistant Superintendent for Business and Administrative Services Stephen J. Tibbetts and several BOCES Board trustees, the class of 2016 had the opportunity to recite the Nurse’s Pledge with lighted candles in hand.
