SUNY Purchase Named A Top-10 Liberal Arts College

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Purchase College, SUNY, was chosen as one of the “Top 10 Public Liberal Arts Colleges in the Nation” by U.S. News & World Report’s 2013 edition of Best Colleges, said a news release from the school.

Purchase had also been selected as one of the top 377 colleges in the nation by The Princeton Review.

“While Purchase is proud to be recognized as a top-tier school by these prestigious publications, we feel what’s most important is to remain loyal to our mission of creating a unique and supportive community that advances an open-minded engagement with the creative process,” said Purchase College President Thomas J. Schwarz in the release. “We want to ensure our students’ academic and personal development, as well as open doors to professional opportunities.”

The statement added that Purchase is “nationally renowned as one of the leading institutions to pair conservatory programs in the arts with liberal arts programs.”

Most classes are conducted as seminars, and students are encouraged to work closely with faculty, whether in labs, on stage, in studios, or in the field,” said the statement. “Purchase College also boasts an impressive list of highly successful alumni that includes editors, authors, physicians, artists, performers, teachers and clinical psychologists.”

Purchase was founded in 1967 by then-Gov. Nelson Rockefeller as part of the State University of New York, which is the “largest comprehensive university system in the United States.”
