HARRISON, N.Y. - More than 130 academic institutions came to Harrison recently as Harrison High School hosted its seventh annual college fair. School officials celebrated the fair's outreach and effectiveness.
Harrison Central School District Communications Officer Monica Miles said the fair was a "smashing success."
Students from grades nine through 12 came through with parents prepared to observe. A substantial amount of planning by students, parents and academic advisors occurred before this year's fair, school officials said. Harrison High School students browsed through with "A Guidebook for Students and Parents" under their arms, along with test scores, grade point averages and course information.
School officials said students and parents asked questions ranging from academic requirements and course availability to tuition and financial aid needs, and overall campus feel.
During the fair, students were encouraged to speak with the admissions representative of the schools of their interest and complete information cards to earn credit with the college for the interaction. In some cases, application fees were reduced or eliminated just by filling out the cards.
Students were also encouraged to record the impressions of the colleges they interacted with and further research those colleges of interest. Feedback from the college representatives was extremely positive, the school said.
Students looking to research college options don't have to stop when the fair ends. "Many colleges and universities come to Harrison High School and meet with our students individually or in small groups," Miles said.
Representatives from over 50 colleges and universities from as far as TCU to Vanderbilt and Tulane, to the University of Richmond and George Washington University to the northern schools like Boston University, Hamilton College and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, will have visited students on the Harrison High School campus before the Thanksgiving break.
