Championship Team Honored by Harrison Board

HARRISON, N.Y. – Harrison Mayor Ron Belmont honored the 2012 Harrison Little League All-Star softball team Thursday night for its victorious run through the District 20 Championship Tournament in early July.

“I’m very proud of you,” said Belmont, who handed certificates of achievement to each player. “Hopefully, this is the beginning of many future evenings just like this.”

The All-Stars beat Eastchester, 2-1. But they lost, 4-3, to Nanuet in the next round.

When it came to the business of Thursday's town/village board meetings, Harrison Police Chief Anthony Marraccini said he was glad to see the board approve his request for stop signs at West and Grove Streets in the northbound and southbound lanes.

“There was one stop sign that was there during a construction period of the West Street / I-95 Bridge,” he said of the summer project. “While that stop sign was erected temporarily, we found that it really made traffic much safer through that intersection.”

However, once the sign was removed, the police department “recognized the difficulties with navigating that intersection” and the chief “found that it would prudent to ask the board to approve two permanent stop signs.” The stop signs are not the only additions Harrison will see, as a proposal from Rye Brook-based Textile Management Corp to place recycling bins for clothes and shoes at the Harrison Police Department and another at the Silver Lake lower parking lot, was approved. The bins could be in place by Sept.15.

In a letter to Supervisor Ron Belmont on Aug. 29, Textile Management CEO Ted Fisher said the program comes with “no costs, liability or hassle to your municipality.” Fisher’s company is responsible for managing and maintaining the program, he said.

Harrison will receive $100 per month per location and will also be insured, Fisher said.
