Westchester Officials Debate Plugging $17.6M Budget Hole

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Westchester County nonprofit officials and county staff already are bracing for budget cuts as county officials debate how to fill the $17.6 million projected budget deficit in light of County Executive Rob Astorino's pledge to not raise property taxes, lohud.com reported.

Declining consumer spending along with low gas prices and stagnant inflation are some of the reasons officials cite for the lower-than-expected revenue, according to the lohud.com story. Astorino has kept his pledge to not raise property taxes, but some officials wonder if that can continue, lohud.com said.

Meanwhile, officials in nonprofit agencies supported by the county said the budget uncertainty affects their ability to hire and keep staff and provide services, lohud.com said. Some county officials are suggesting a sales tax increase should be considered as well, lohud.com reported.
