WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Police say two burglary suspects are in custody after officers chased a van under investigation down the Hutchinson River Parkway, followed it as it looped around Mamaroneck Avenue, and arrested the driver once the vehicle hit a guard rail near the Mobil station on the border of White Plains and Harrison on the highway.
The second suspect ran into the woods in Harrison, according to White Plains Police Chief James Bradley. White Plains, Harrison, and Westchester County officers were called into search for the suspect, who was arrested around 12:30 p.m. Friday.
The dark blue van first caught the attention of police around 11:30 a.m. when an officer noticed it in a neighborhood where police said it looked suspicious. The officer called in the license plates, and the department then learned that other Westchester municipalities had placed an "intelligence flier" on the car.
Undercover police following the car attempted to stop it when it started to leave the White Plains boundaries. Bradley said the driver then "took off" and continued south on the Hutchinson River Parkway.
Police followed the van as it looped around Mamaroneck Avenue, and turned north on the Hutch. At that point the car collided with a guard rail just past the Mobil station near the North Street exit while avoiding a second police unit.
Bradley said he could not say why the van was under investigation or give further details on the ongoing investigation. "There's going to be a long investigation that is just starting," he said.
An email from Public Safety Commissioner David Chong indicates that the two arrested were burglary suspects. Harrison High School was locked down briefly this morning, however, published reports indicate that the school returned to normal by 12:30 p.m Friday.
