S.J. Preston Honors West Harrison Fire Department

HARRISON, N.Y. - West Harrison elementary students reached out to their fire department last month when members of S.J. Preston Elementary School's Green Key Society honored firefighters for the department's 100th year celebration.

Fourth and fifth graders from the service-oriented group presented firefighters with a bucket full of Lifesavers candies to show how many lives they save and a personalized "thank you" for the work they've done for the community.

Students involved with the Green Key Society work in community outreach programs in Harrison, including senior assistance, child care or assisting veterans and the military. Past efforts include the collection of more than 60 boxes of cereal last spring that were donated to the Harrison Food Pantry and Grace Church.

The group also writes cards to senior citizens and soldiers, creates placemats for Thanksgiving dinner at Grace Church and performs programs at Blythedale Children's Hospital.
