HARRISON, N.Y. - The holiday decorations across Harrison's business district suggest more than a more festive downtown. Harrison Chamber of Commerce President Ada Angarano said the local shops offer a more convenient and fruitful holiday shopping experience.
"Because many of our local businesses are specialty shops, it makes it extremely convenient to purchase that one-of-a-kind gift for that special person," Angarano said. "Most of our delicious restaurants and eateries offer gift certificates, which would make the ideal gifts for anyone."
According to Angarano, the local mom-and-pop stores offer an attentio to detail that larger chains cannot. She said she was even buying some family members' holiday gifts from local specialty stores.
"I never would have purchased those kinds of things anywhere else as I've never seen them anywhere else," Angarano said.
Local resident Bob Raymonda said shopping locally was appropriate when done for the right reasons.
"It really depends on what I need," Raymonda said. "If I'm looking for a more personable and specialized gift, I'll probably look to shop around here. Otherwise, the prices at the larger chain stores can't be beaten."
Specialty shops in downtown Harrison include various Italian restaurants, specialty jewelry stores, hair salons, and flower shops to name a few.
