HARRISON, N.Y. - Students at Purchase College took to the main mall of campus Wednesday with signs of protest, declaring their support for higher education in conjunction with the New York City Occupy Wall Street demonstrations.
"What we are doing here is for the 99 percent," said student Dan Nation of Brewster. "It's time somebody does something to cut the corporate greed. We can't afford our own education."
Occupy Wall Street has grown into an international stand against social and economic inequality, which suited Purchase's student body well as students shared stories of the consequences of what they called overpriced tuition. Students at the college have held similar protests against State University of New York (SUNY) budget cuts on an annual basis for the last several years with support shown from College President Thomas J. Schwarz.
Bob Raymonda, a senior creative writing major, was at the protest with friends but wasn't too impressed."I don't see the point in the ruckus. We do this every year but these kids don't show up on election day. They just came to scream and shout."
Known to be a politically active campus, Purchase College's online student-run newspaper The Brick reported Thursday a firsthand student account of being arrested in the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations in New York City.
Colleges throughout New York held similar demonstrations last week including Brooklyn College in the city.
