Mayor Honors West Harrison Junior Firefighters, Lifelong Resident

HARRISON, N.Y. – Harrison and West Harrison residents of varying ages were honored Tuesday night by the town board.

Certificates of achievement were handed out to the West Harrison Junior Firefighters for their participation and training in the program.

“It’s a great thing you guys are doing,” said former firefighter and current council member Fred Sciliano of the teenagers. “It is so important for volunteers.”

Mayor Ron Belmont commended the 13 boys for their hard work and said he was “very, very proud” of them. The program, which started last July for boys aged 13 to 18, has recently added three new volunteers.

“After one year of training, they look great and they were in a competition this summer for a parade as well as some firefighting situations on an overnight,” he said. “They did really, really well. I am really excited about them being here.”

Another local honored by the town board was lifelong resident Nick Galasso, who was awarded 29th Annual Harrison “Citizen of the Year.” He volunteered many years in baseball and other athletic programs, Belmont said, who added that he was proud of Galasso as citizen of the year.

Galasso was nominated by a fellow citizen and picked by a committee.  He will be presented Oct. 8 with a plaque during the “It’s Great to Live in Harrison” Celebration.

Department of recreation superintendent Gerry Salvo called Galasso “a wonderful role model for our residents.”

“His many years of service to the children of Harrison and continuous commitment to the sports program make him an honorable citizen which the town can be proud of,” said Salvo.
