HARRISON, N.Y. - Harrison's Chamber of Commerce President Ada Angarano isn't just about business. She's also a pet lover.
Angarano's recently adopted dog Lady Mia posed for photos for the New Rochelle Humane Society's 2012 calendar last summer and could act as a poster-dog for what Angarano said she hopes will get other dogs adopted from non-kill shelters.
"This beautiful purebred Cocker Spaniel puppy was only seven months old and handicapped with an eye condition when we brought her into our family," Angarano said.
The New Rochelle Humane Society tried one procedure before the dog was adopted, but it was unsuccessful, Angarano said. Lady Mia was in need of a second surgery on her eyes, which the NRHS covered financially.
"Lady Mia came home looking more 'beautiful' than she had before," Angarano said.
Angarano said Lady Mia fell into her lap as a "gift from God" as she was strolling through the Harrison Dog Park downtown.
"We had no plans to adopt any more animals, having four indoor cats and our dog Sadie, who we adopted from NRHS in 2009," Angarano said. "But after accidentally bumping into this little puppy at the Harrison Dog Park, it was fate and my husband and I knew it."
The NRHS is a private non-profit organization that gives animals like Lady Mia a home in 17 Westchester communities.
"I ask any person or family thinking about adopting a pet to visit the New Rochelle Humane Society first," Angarano said. "They have many beautiful, loving puppies and dogs like our Lady Mia and Sadie and adorable kittens and adult cats who want nothing more than to live with a loving family."
