Harrison Town Board Approves Gannett Demolition

HARRISON, N.Y. - The Harrison town board approved plans to demolish One Gannett Drive, allowing the construction of a new Lifetime Fitness facility on the property by 2014.

Attorney Frank McCullough represented Lifetime Fitness Wednesday night at the Harrison town/village board meeting to further a discussion over the demolition of the soon-to-be vacant One Gannett Drive. He said the two-year construction period should begin in 2012 with a demolition planned to take about six months. "We're ready to move forward with this," McCullough said.

The proposed demolition included plans for Lifetime Fitness to build a new facility on the property consisting of roughly 209,000 square feet on 22 acres. The company first applied to the board last May.

Members of the town board were in support of the new facility throughout its approval process, citing its appeal to Westchester residents and lack of interference with residential areas in town. "We're anxious to get it," council member Marlane Amelio said.

McCullough said the fitness center will include a rock-climbing wall, full-service spa, a children fitness facility, three swimming pools and tennis, squash and racquetball courts. Proposals for the site said close to 200 employees will help operate the facility.

Mayor and Supervisor Joan Walsh said the plans look hopeful for Harrison. "The plans look marvelous," Walsh said. "It all looks very exciting."
