Harrison Police Arrest Two in Chase Bank Scam

UPDATE: The arraignment for Mustafa and Caraivan was moved to Tuesday, Aug. 23. The change has been made to the story.

HARRISON, N.Y. - Two Romanian men were arrested Sunday after police said they caught them manipulating an ATM at a local Chase Bank.

Timur Mustafa, 33, and Marian Caraivan, 41, were caught removing a skimming device and pinhole camera from the ATM inside the 275 Halstead Ave. Chase branch during a stakeout Sunday night police said. The equipment is used to get personal information from an ATM.

Police said the two are part of a larger crime syndicate.

Both were charged with third-degree burglary and two counts of criminal possession of a forgery device, all felonies.

Police were told of the illegal activity inside the ATM before the arrest by Chase Security and waited for the men to return for their equipment. Officers staked out the location Sunday and watched the men walk to the bank from the Harrison train station across the street.

Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were told of the arrests and will also be conducting an investigation.

Mustafa and Caraivan are being held without bail at the Westchester County Jail and are scheduled to appear in Harrison Town Court Tuesday, Aug. 23.
