HARRISON, N.Y. -- If the mere sight of a litter of puppies playing football makes you smile and want to run out and adopt a puppy, you might to put on the brakes and wait a few days.
The people at the Harrison Pet Rescue say residents should not plan on showing up on Christmas Day to take a dog home for their kids. Although there are plenty of dogs for adoption, the rescue's adoption process is rigorous.
In order to adopt a dog, potential owners will need to attend a meet-and-greet on Saturdays from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and then pass a reference check.
“It is important,” says Paula Krenkel, head of Harrison Pet Rescue, “to match people with the perfect pet (dog or cat) so they are not returned to us.”
The group also holds special rescue events throughout the year to help match pets with owners.
Anyone ready to adopt a pet can contact Harrison Pet Rescue by email at nypetrescue@gmal.com, or for more information, visit www.ny-petrescue.org.
