HARRISON, N.Y. The Harrison Town Board changed local parking regulations last week, banning commercial vehicles from parking on residential roads overnight. Just before passing the motion, Council member Steve Malfitano suggested the fine be raised from its original $50 to $100.
An aging Harrison debate reached a head at the Jan. 5 town board meeting when Mayor Ron Belmont and his new administration moved to ban commercial vehicles from parking overnight on residential streets. The debate became controversial when some residents voiced opposition to allowing Harrison Police to use their discretion when determining if a vehicle is commercial or residential.
Council memver Steve Malfitano stopped the discussion moments before the board went to a vote to suggest the fine be raised from $50 to $100, saying the penalty should be greater.
"If you want to discourage this, the penalty should be more," Malfitano said at the Jan. 5 town board meeting.
The board was unified in raising the fine to $100 before voting to pass the parking changes.
