WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. A Harrison lawyer drove away from an officer Sunday evening and he was then discovered with his Mercedes-Benz in the basement of a parking garage, police said. Bruno Gioffre, Jr. was charged with driving while intoxicated.
Gioffre, 39, first caught attention from police when an officer said Gioffre was speeding down Westchester Ave. and ran a red light at S. Kensico Avenue at about 7:15 p.m. He was pulled over at 237 Martine Ave. When asked why he may have been stopped, Gioffre told officers, "because I wasn't wearing my seat belt," police reports said.
The police officer told Gioffre that he was driving at an "excessive speed" and asked him to remain in the car while the officer wrote a summons. Police said when the officer looked up, Gioffre had moved his Mercedes-Benz to a location out of police's sight and was approaching the officer.
Gioffre was told to return his car to its original spot and remain in his Mercedes, according to police. However, police said he drove down into the parking garage, prompting the officer to call for backup.
Police said the attorney approached them unsteadily and slurred his words when they discovered him in the garage basement. Police reports said Gioffre refused to take a sobriety test in the parking lot as well as chemical sobriety tests at police headquarters.
He was arrested and charged with one count of driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor.
