At approximately 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday night, police and fire crews were dispatched to a Pilgrim Road home following multiple reports of the smell of oil coming from the property, which sits adjacent to a wetland.
According to officials, approximately 100 gallons of heating fuel oil spilled out. Upon arrival, fire, police and hazmat crews found that the backyard was flooded from recent rains, which may have caused the underground tanks to leak.
Police had to close Pilgrim Street temporarily overnight as the cleanup efforts began. According to reports, both the front and backyards were completely underwater. No other houses on the street were affected by the spill, and no neighbors had to be evacuated.
