Pager is a senior at the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry and serves as one of three editors-in-chief of the school's newspaper, the Tower. He has worked at the paper for the last four years, and his work has also appeared in other publications such as the Wall Street Journal Classroom Edition, the Daily Northwestern and the Harrison Report.
Last summer, Pager attended a journalism program at Medill-Northwestern Journalism Institute. instructor Nick Castele wrote in his recommendation for the JEA competition, "As a relentless seeker of facts, Tyler served as a role model in our community of student journalists last summer. I am confident that he will continue to do so in college and beyond."
Castele remembered Pager's courage in pursuing a story. "Earlier that day," he wrote, "I was shocked when Tyler told me he'd written another story, one we hadn't even assigned. He tagged along with Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl as she shook hands during the parade. I don't think I, as a high school student, could have approached the mayor and asked to write about her. But Tyler showed he's fearless in the face of a story."
Pager's application to the competition consisted of a 38-page portfolio of his work from the past four years. His portfolio will be evaluated at the national level against the other state finalists. Pager will represent New York at the JEA/NSPA National High School Journalism Convention in San Francisco in April, where the national winner will be announced.
