This year’s holiday celebration kickoffs were a big success. From candy canes to carolers and Santa’s arrival, both West Harrison and downtown Harrison celebrated in style. The hot chocolate flowed in West Harrison as Frosty the Snowman visited with residents, young and old. Choral groups entertained the crowds in downtown Harrison culminating in the lighting of the Christmas tree and menorah. It was great to see so many new friends and familiar faces as these are the occasions that highlight the true meaning of the season. Both events did a wonderful job reflecting the charm and magic that the holidays should bring to us all.
Harrison is a wonderful place to do your holiday shopping. Locally owned shops and restaurants offer a warm and welcoming atmosphere and it’s a great spot to get together with neighbors and friends as you get ready for the season’s celebrations. While making your way through your shopping list, be sure to drop in to local establishments and join in the festive mood.
I am happy to report that were three recent promotions made within the Harrison Police Department. At the Dec. 1 swearing-in ceremony in Town Hall, Lt. Michael Olsey was promoted to police chief, Lt. Ed Detlefs was promoted to police captain and Sgt. John Vasta was promoted to lieutenant. I am completely confident that these gentlemen will carry out their new duties in a professional manner and will continue to be an asset to the Town/Village of Harrison.
This weekend, marked the opening season for high school wrestling in Westchester County. Locally, Rye High School hosted the 2016 Bernie Miller Wrestling Tournament where eight championship teams competed. Led by Coach Vincent Nicita, our powerful Husky wrestlers took on the other schools, some twice our size in numbers, and brought home a First Place trophy. This victory certainly puts a spotlight on the team and adds to the feeling of hometown pride. Congratulations to coach Nicita, the team and specifically to Tyler Joseph, who won an individual award for Best in Weight Class, and to Andrew Hollander, the highest awarded student, who received a Best in Weight Class award and the Best High School Senior award.
In closing, as we enjoy this holiday season and celebrate with family, friends and loved ones, it would be wonderful to find a way to give back to those in need. Volunteering at a local shelter or donating food and clothing are small acts of kindness that have a great impact in our community. State and local organizations will be increasing their efforts to assist food banks and soup kitchens. Stocking shelves and feeding those in need are meaningful ways to volunteer your time and celebrate the spirit of generosity. It’s an excellent opportunity to celebrate life’s good fortune and I urge all to take part.
