The money will go toward the 110 Harrison families in “financial crisis,” who rely on the local food pantry. This holiday season, 356 individuals, including 17 elderly and 136 children, need help. Residents were asked to donate $150 to sponsor a family.
“Making someone smile and just knowing that you kind of helped somebody” was the best part of the project, said Ruth Singer, Holiday Project chairperson. “As happy as it makes those families, it makes me happy knowing that I helped somebody. That’s a really wonderful thing. It’s a win-win for everybody."
The mother of two says being involved in one's community is important. “You have to take care of what’s in your own home and community first” before taking care of others, she said.
Most donations were either $150 or $300, but some donated even more, including Shield and Cross Mc Inc. with the largest donation of $1,500. The Harrison Police Association and Harrison Association of Teachers raised $1,000 and $900, respectively, for the cause.
Authorization to accept the money will be given to town/villag Comptroller Maureen MacKenzie at Thursday night’s board meeting.
