That was when Kneuer bought Gus's Franklin Park, the restaurant his grandfather originally opened in 1931.
It was a longtime dream of Kneuer's to have the place back in the family. "I have a lot of good memories of growing up here," Kneuer told Daily Voice during a recent visit.
Then, in 2014, Kneuer upped the ante, opening a fresh seafood market right next door. "Our customers wanted us to expand, so that's what got us to expand to the market," he said.
Since it opened, The Market at Gus's has earned a reputation as being the go to spot for great seafood in Westchester.
"Our seafood is all hand-picked carefully, and all fresh," manager Peter Kissel said. "We clean and cook all of our own shrimp, and our red snapper is right from the golf coast."
The store's number one seller is salmon – organic or wild. Also popular is the swordfish the red snapper and the flounder. "People love our seafood." Kissel said. We also have produce, artisanal cheeses, a butcher shop and a gourmet deli. And we also make our own fresh mozzarella. Our big thing is customer service."
Gus's Franklin Park Restauarant is best known for its amazing lobster - steamed or boiled. Gus's gorgonzola salad is also popular, as are the soft shell crabs, blackened swordfish and clams.
And their lobster roll was voted Best in Westchester by the Journal News.
"All our meats are USDA prime, from our own butcher shop, and people love it," Kneuer said. "You can't get fresher seafood, and the meat doesn't need any flavoring. It's just delicious."
