A Westchester resident has tested positive for the first case of West Nile Virus found this year in the county. A New Rochelle resident has been confirmed to be positive for West Nile Virus, Westchester County officials announced on Thursday, Aug. 31. Several beaches in Westchester along Long Island Sound have been closed indefinitely following the discovery of bacteria in the water, officials said. The eight beaches, located in New Rochelle, Mamaroneck, and Rye, were shut down on Tuesday, Aug. 29 based on the bacteriological results of beach water samples collected the day before, the Westchester Health Department announced. Mosquitoes In Westchester Test Positive For West Nile Virus For First Time This Year
This season’s first batch of mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus have been identified in Westchester, the county health department announced. The mosquitoes were identified in Mamaroneck. The area surrounding the positive mosquito batches were inspected on Friday, Sept. 6 by the Health Department, which has treated nearby catch basins to protect against further mosquito breeding nearby. Rabies Confirmed In Kitten Captured In Westchester
A small kitten which was captured late last week by police in Northern Westchester has tested positive for rabies. Health Department officials confirmed Thursday that the animal tested positive for rabies. Pound Ridge Police retrieved the small gray and white kitten in the area of Westchester Avenue and Upper Shad Road near Scotts Corners on Friday, July 27 at 9 a.m. after receiving calls from local residents who tried to capture it, Pound Ridge Police Chief Dave Ryan announced Thursday.
