The death of a young athlete who died during a collision between two hockey players on the ice during a game earlier this week is being mourned in areas near and far from both inside and outside the hockey community. Fairfield County resident Teddy Balkind was 16 years old and a 10th-grader at the St. Luke’s School in New Canaan. The incident that led to his death happened around 5 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 6, during a junior varsity game at the Brunswick Upper School in Greenwich. Lord Stanley’s Cup is coming to take a tour in Westchester in what is sure to be a bittersweet day for some New York Rangers fans. New Rochelle native - and former Ranger - Kevin Shattenkirk was a key cog in the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Stanley Cup victory after they topped the Dallas Stars in game six to claim the cup on Monday. Westchester native Kevin Shattenkirk and several of his New York Ranger teammates ditched sticks and pucks for frisbees and Kan Jam to raise money for pediatric cancer research. Shattenkirk, a New Rochelle native, was joined by several of his teammates on Saturday, Feb. 9 for a full-day Kan Jam tournament at House of Sports in Ardsley to raise money for children affected by cancer.
