School District In Westchester Names New Superintendent
A longtime educator from Long Island has been chosen to take over a Westchester County school district. The Port Chester Board of Education announced that Dr. Aurelia Lucia Henriquez, who has spent nearly three decades in various positions throughout diverse Long Island school districts has been named as the new school superintendent. A school board president in Westchester is in hot water after a racially charged social media post was made through his Facebook account. Port Chester Board of Education President Thomas Corbia said that the account was hacked during a lengthy virtual meeting on Thursday, Sept. 17. There will be a new item added to the docket on a Board of Education meeting in Westchester County after “disturbing” social media posts involving members of the school district circulated online. Parents and school administrators at a middle school in Westchester were caught off guard by a recently distributed extra credit assignment that invoked 19th Century slavery. A photo of an assignment given to students at the Port Chester Middle School, in which they would have to create a “runaway slave ad” has gone viral on Facebook, and has drawn the ire of local parents and school administrators. Residents Narrowly Defeat $12M Project For Westchester Middle School
By 53 votes, residents of the Port Chester-Rye Union Free School District narrowly defeated a $12.5 million renovation project on Tuesday, Feb. 6, with most of the work planned at Port Chester Middle School. A total of 940 residents voted for the project and 993 voted against it. This project primarily addresses the recent emergency safety work and necessary reconstruction at Port Chester Middle School for a long-term, safe and cost-effective solution.
