Students At Middle School In Westchester Asked To Create 'Runaway Slave' Ad Parents and school administrators at a middle school in Westchester were caught off guard by a recently distributed extra credit assignment that invoked 19th Century slavery. A photo of an assignment given to students at the Port Chester Middle School, in which they would have to create a “runaway slave ad” has gone viral on Facebook, and has drawn the ire of local parents and school administrators. Forgotten Westchester Civil War Hero To Be Honored On Memorial Day Memorial Day was originally established as Decoration Day, to honor Civil War soldiers.  This month, the Village of Mamaroneck will honor a forgotten local Civil War veteran, Corporal Nicholas H. Hoyt, who was born in Mamaroneck and who lived there with his wife, Susan and their three children.  In 1861, Hoyt enlisted in the 5th New York Infantry and was promoted to the rank of corporal after the battle of Shepherdstown, W. Va. In nearby Sharpsburg, MD, Antietam National Battlefield was the site of a brutal Civil War battle. Hoyt died in 1863 following the battle of Fredericksburg. He is…
