Irvington Pins Down Young Woodlands Team

GREENBURGH, N.Y. – The Woodlands High School wrestling team fought valiantly but ultimately fell to Irvington on Friday afternoon.

The Falcons fell, 54-39, to drop to 3-11 on the season. Woodlands coach Jason Parker said he knew that Irvington would provide a challenge and wanted to steer clear of its more experienced wrestlers.

“We got kind of fortunate that we were able to avoid some of those matches and matched my inexperienced wrestlers up with some of their inexperienced wrestlers,” Parker said. “We had a very competitive match.”

The two schools were tied at 18 after the sixth match of the afternoon. Irvington’s Peter Jones then pinned his opponent in the following match to earn six points, and Devin Pena also collected a pin to give Irvington a 30-24 lead.

Adam Krieger also earned a pin for six more points and Irvington never looked back.

The Falcons have an extremely young team. There are one senior and two juniors on Woodlands’ 17-man roster, while the rest are eighth through 10th graders.

Parker spends time recruiting students to join the team and he knows that the process of growing his team will be a long one.

“I got 25 new kids out to wrestle this year and about eight of them stayed on because it’s not an easy sport,” Parker said. “We’re just looking to keep building. If we can get eight new kids every year, we’re going to be okay.”
